EDSA DOS AND THE ROLE OF ICT PLATFORMS

EDSA DOS

This, also known as the 2001 EDSA Revolution, happened from January 17 to 21, 2001. It was fueled after 11 prosecutors for President Joseph Estrada walked out of the impeachment trial. On October 4, 2000, one of President Estrada’s close friends exposed him for receiving millions of pesos from playing an illegal game called "jueteng.” As a result, the crowd in EDSA grew over the course of a few days through text brigades.

It was the use of cellphones for “texting” rather than calls that was the most intriguing part of EDSA Dos and was also the key to its success. EDSA Dos was arguably the world's first "e-revolution,” a change of government brought about by new forms of ICTs.

This tool was used by Filipinos to mobilize people by text messaging. During EDSA DOS, they send text messages to people about the corruption and the wrongdoings of former president Joseph Estrada and beg people to participate in a political event, which is to protest that made him impeached.

The role of ICT during EDSA DOS is very crucial because we use ICT to give information to other people on what is going on in our country or within the politics. It gave us the knowledge on how to react to the issue or information given.

Like what happened during EDSA Dos, people knew what was happening within the government; they evaluated the information to make the right decision, and because of the wrongful use of power, people started to react.

ICT has a big role in our lives; it makes our lives easier and makes our decisions wiser.
